Position & Athletics Department Overview
Gateway's Athletic Director (a .8 FTE position at 32 hours/week) is responsible for the implementation of an educational approach to Athletics and to making sure that our sports programs and those who participate therein align with- and demonstrate- the values of Gateway High School.
Our Athletic Director and the coaches who work underneath him/her/them should be sensitive and supportive of the specific needs of our student-athletes and families and a driver of change as well. They are responsible for hiring, supervising and helping coaches, student-athletes and teams to continue to grow and evolve and for creating a healthy, positive and strong culture across our program.
Our Athletics program currently supports 8 teams (Girls JV & Varsity Volleyball and Boys Varsity Soccer in the Fall, Girls Varsity Basketball, Boys JV & Varsity Basketball & Girls Varsity Soccer in the Winter and Co-Ed Varsity Baseball in the Spring). We're part of the North Coast Section (D-IV), the Bay Area Conference and the Bay Counties League Central. We have an on-campus gym, fitness center and student-athlete resource center with on-site parking and we use San Francisco Rec & Parks fields to support our soccer & baseball programs.
Compensation:
- The compensation range for this .8 position is $68,000-$76,000
- Commensurate with experience

Specific Athletic Director Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Provide social & emotional support for our student-athletes and coaches to help them learn, grow and activate their full potential on and off of the field of play
- Scheduling & Logistics including:
- Holding a master facilities schedule that accommodates all athletics teams, elective use, permitted outside groups and Gateway Middle School
- Requesting and confirming of off campus fields for soccer & baseball, travel
- Traveling for games that require it
- Scheduling and confirmation of officials for all contests
- Strategic season scheduling that helps our teams remain competitive and to succeed
- Distributing and collecting eligibility paperwork and waivers for all student-athletes
- Publicizing and enforcing of important athletics deadlines
- Hiring, supervising & developing coaches
- Attending league & section meetings on a regular basis and making sure that Gateway remains compliant with all rules, regulations & Title-IX requirements
- Budget management (for the department and for coaches and booster account), strategic investment in the athletics program, fundraising
- Uniform and equipment inventory, ordering & maintenance
- Fitness center and student-athlete resource center design, curation, development, maintenance and upkeep
- Administrating games, scrimmages, exhibitions, special community events centered around athletics (like our Reptile Rumble in the Fall, Alumni games and our two basketball tournaments in the Winter)
- Managing the PE hours submission process, ensuring all students obtain the required 20 credits of PE required for graduation
- Monitoring academic performance and citizenship of student-athletes, pushing them to succeed off of the court/field and to be valuable and positive members of our community and communicating and collaborating with student-athletes, coaches, teachers, parents and families, administration and student support staff.
- Finding, training and supervising team support staffs and managers
- Hold listening sessions for student-athletes and coaches, receive and provide feedback to necessary parties towards the goal of continued improvement and towards the best possible experience for everyone involved in athletics
- Managing Gateway Athletic social media and using it to drive interest and participation in athletics
- Holding sports intro meetings for student-athletes and parents and families at the beginning of each season, close-out meetings at the end, and a sports awards banquet in the spring
- Advocating for departmental improvements and growth in collaboration with school administration
Qualifications:
- Background and experience in sports, passion for athletics and a deep understanding of the contribution that sports can make to a rounded education.
- Strong handle on logistics, communication (both written and spoken, in person and by phone, text and email, with both teenagers and adults)
- Ability to collaborate, to multi-task and triage in a high pressure, deadline based environment
- Commitment to Gateway's mission is essential, including a desire to work with a diverse student body
- Desire to work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians and to be part of building the larger school culture and community
- Initiative, flexibility and creativity to build upon a growing program
- Experience working with high school students in an urban public school highly preferred
- First-Aid, AED, Concussion awareness and various other certifications (which can be completed post-hire)
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Week night and Saturday availability
