Step 2: Explore the Background Next, you’ll dive deeper into the career of a Biomedical Engineers. You’ll learn about the skills, education, and training needed, as well as salary expectations and what a typical day on the job looks like. Step 3: Research & Product Creation Now it’s time to take on a real-world challenge! You’ll learn about the Goal, Role, Audience, and Situation (GRAS) for your project. Then, you’ll choose a product to create, conduct research, and begin your work. Step 4: Career Review Survey Once you’ve finished and uploaded your product, you’ll complete a short survey to reflect on what you’ve learned about this career and your future career interests. Tip: Click the “Notes” button on each slide for extra help as you work through the project. Set the Stage: Health Science Overview Careers involve delivering health care to people and animals Coursework includes Health Science, Math, and Technology Skills: reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking, and communicating effectively Set the Stage: Biotechnology Research & Development Overview Sub-Cluster Overview: Biotechnology Research & Development Pathway Includes occupations involved in bioscience research and development as it applies to human health Education requirements from some college courses to Advanced Degrees Jobs range from technicians and compliance managers to biomedical engineers and bioinformatics scientists Set the Stage: Cluster and Sub-Cluster Check-ins 1 What excites you most about the jobs within this career cluster and sub-cluster? 2 Do you think careers in this cluster and sub-cluster match your interests and strengths? Why or why not? Explore the Background: Biomedical Engineers Overview Video Explore the Background: Biomedical Engineers Overview Let's learn more about Biomedical Engineers! Biomedical Engineers generally require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not. Explore the Background: Career Check-ins 1 What knowledge, skills and abilities are helpful for this career? 2 Based on the knowledge, skills and abilities, do you think this career would be a good fit for you? Why or why not? Explore the Background: Goal, Role, Audience & Situation Video Do the Research & Product Creation: Product Choice Prosthetic Hand Protective Pill Covering Design a prosthetic for your dominant hand (the one you write with). Create a pill covering that will dissolve in saliva (water) and carry the medications into the stomach of the patient. Do the Research & Product Creation: Product 1 Assignment: Protective Pill Covering As a biomedical engineer, you will sometimes test new drug therapies that will improve the life of your patients. For this product you will create a pill covering that will dissolve in saliva (water) and carry the medications into the stomach of the patient. Many medicines help our bodies fight sicknesses and diseases, but can also make our stomachs hurt. You may also have patients who have difficulty swallowing a pill. Experiment with different types of foods that will allow you to coat the pill (skittle or m&m) and dissolve easily when in the stomach. Obviously, you will not taste-test these coverings so design an experiment that will test the solubility of the pill after you protect it. You can use foods found around your house like flour, cornstarch, sugar and vegetable for your coverings. Once you have created the best pill covering, record a short video that will help you sell this idea to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Do the Research & Product Creation: Product 2 Assignment: Prosthetic Hand In order to understand the movement of tendons and ligaments, your task is to design a prosthetic for your dominant hand (the one you write with). You will need to research how prosthetics work and are made. Gather data by taking measurements for your own hand and then begin your build. Using cardboard or foam and rubber bands, carefully build your design and see if you can manipulate the fingers and hand using the rubber bands. If you do not have these materials, create a drawing or use an online program to design your hand. Once built, video the movements that you can make with this prosthetic hand or yourself explaining how your drawing or online design works. Explain what materials are being used to replicate (copy) the movement of tendons and ligaments. Do the Research & Product Creation: Design Process Do the Research & Product Creation: Vocabulary The following terms and definitions may be helpful for your work: Angiography - x-ray imaging of blood vessels after injection of contrast material Biomechanics - the study of the movement and structure of the human body, especially the forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure Biomedical Engineering - an engineering field that improves human health by designing solutions for disease, diagnosis and injury that combine engineering, biology and medicine Elastography - estimates tissue stiffness and measures elasticity of tissues; used to image palpation, evaluates masses, and myocardium Laparoscope - instrument used for visual examination of the abdominal cavity Ligaments- a fibrous connective tissue which attaches bone to bone Medical Device - any device designed to diagnose, prevent, monitor, treat or alleviate an injury or disease, intended for human beings and sometimes animals Microparticles - membrane-bound cytoplasmic fragments that are released from platelets Minimally Invasive - when a medical device or procedure uses the smallest incision possible, or the least possible trauma to the body, so that recovery and rehabilitation are quicker Morphometry - the process of measuring the external shape and dimensions of landforms, living organisms, or other objects Neuroimaging - refers to a set of techniques that allows researchers to make detailed maps of the human brain and assign functions to particular regions in the brain Neurosurgeons - a surgeon who specializes in surgery of the brain and spinal cord Radiation- the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles that cause ionization Rehabilitative - restoring someone to health through physical, mental, or emotional training Tendons - a fibrous connective tissue which attaches muscle to bone Tissue Engineering - the use of cells and engineering materials for the repair or replacement of damaged tissues and organs Do the Research & Product Creation: Research Resources The following resources may be helpful for your work: Do the Research & Product Creation: Product Check-ins 1 How do the products relate to the responsibilities of people employed in this career? 2 What knowledge and skills are required to work in this career?
