Job Description

The mission of Bank Street College of Education (the College) is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying all available knowledge about learning and growth, and connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. Bank Street Education Center (the Ed Center) is a division within the College, created to support Bank Street's public impact work through external partnerships.

About the Organization

The Ed Center disrupts inequity through system-level change to help design better educational experiences for both children and adults. In deep collaboration with program partnersfrom teachers and families to policymakers the Center creates customized approaches that support strengths-based, learner-centered, and equitable educational practices to help all students and educators thrive. Through our work, we are building an evidence base to inform local practice and address some of the nation's deepest organizational challenges currently hindering effective and equitable teaching and learning for all.

The K-12 Math Initiatives center the following tenets. We believe:

  • Mathematics is a learning subject, not a performing subject. Fundamentally, math is about patterns and relationships and is developmental in nature.
  • All students are capable of critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and understanding math at appropriate levels
  • The teacher serves as a facilitator of math learning, and it is their responsibility to craft student-centered, accessible, and engaging learning experiences that move each student along their math learning journey
  • A deep knowledge of content, child development, and a strengths-based approach is necessary for a teacher to meet children where they are in their learning and create equitable math learning spaces that are socially, emotionally, and culturally appropriate
