Position Summary

A growing healthcare organization is seeking a Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist 2 to support its Medical Records department. Under the direction of the Corporate Medical Records Manager, this role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality of patient records. The HIM Specialist 2 is also responsible for managing record releases, supporting death registration, maintaining documentation standards, and serving as a liaison between patients, providers, insurers, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality of patient health information in compliance with HIPAA regulations
• Ensure patient records are complete, accurate, and accessible in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and document management systems
• Audit and analyze records to identify deficiencies and ensure compliance with regulatory standards
• Process and manage requests for the release of medical records to authorized parties
• Perform scanning, indexing, and quality checks of documentation within EMR systems
• Manage death registration processes in accordance with state and organizational guidelines
• Collaborate with physicians, funeral homes, medical examiners, and state health departments to complete death certificates
• Assist with records destruction in alignment with retention policies
• Process departmental mail and respond to correspondence requests in a timely manner
• Support training for new employees or interns in medical records and death registry processes
• Keep management informed of issues or concerns and perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• 2–4 years of experience in a medical records or HIM setting; at least 1 year in healthcare preferred
• Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) preferred
• Associate’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) preferred
• Ability to pass an AHCA Level 2 background check

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and EMR systems
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF) and cloud-based applications
• Strong attention to detail, organizational, and multitasking skills
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and numeric filing systems
