POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Lactation Counsultant facilitates current, consistent and precise instruction for all lactating mothers in the Maternal Child areas which include: Labor and Delivery and Mother Baby. The Certified Lactation Consultant functions, in coordination with the hospital’s policies and procedures, as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to healthcare professionals and patients. This position provides support for quality improvement in the area of lactation coordination. Manages the Lactation Center support group as well as the Maternal Child breastfeeding programs, utilizing support education and intervention in the inpatient setting as well as throughout the continuum of care. Required Licensure/Certifications RN or LVN licensure required BCLS required IBCLC certification required (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) upon hire or achieved within one (1) year from date of hire STABLE certification preferred NRP Certification required upon hire or achieved within six (6) months from date of hire Required/Preferred Education/Experience Minimum Associate Degree or greater preferred Healthcare experience in related specialty area preferred Preferred Education, Licensure, Certification, Experience, Skills, Knowledge And Abilities Effective oral and written communication skills Ability to work within a team to ensure quality care Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills Strong critical thinking and communication skills and ability to prioritize needs continuously Ability to lead a team and function as a team member Excellent customer service skills, follow AIDET philosophy Computer literate in charting and order entry Must demonstrate broad knowledge of all aspects of breastfeeding including the psychosocial Will have experience in maternal/child development, prenatal education, breastfeeding support, and nutrition Must possess a strong foundational knowledge base regarding the nutritional support of the preterm infant. At least 20 hours of breastfeeding education preferred Ability to work independently and effectively produce desired results Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred Las Palmas Medical Center is a 300+ bed full-service hospital in El Paso.
