The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. The Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.**Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions*** Serves as a clinical resource to all units within the hospital on issues related to lactation.* Collaborates with staff on developing resolutions to any inpatient breastfeeding problems.* Develops and provides breastfeeding information, education, and support to patients.* Participates in staff orientation, education, and clinical development; and participate in educational opportunities for staff regarding breastfeeding.* Assists with teaching prenatal classes, participate in inpatient and outpatient teaching programs, and provide telephone support to women who call with questions regarding breastfeeding and maintain records of those calls.* Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.* These statements are intended to describe the essential functions of the job and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.
