ASSIGNMENT

POSITION
There is one (1) immediate vacancy for the position of Library Assistant , 5.5 hours per day, five (5) days per week, ten (10) months a year. Tentative hours are 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The eligibility list is being established to fill current vacancies, hire substitutes and to fill future vacancies for the next six (6) months.

The hourly salary for the job classifications are as follows:
  • Library Assistant - $21.24 - $25.90
  • Library Assistant - Bilingual (Spanish) - $21.78 - $26.54 Hourly

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Provides assistance to students and teachers in locating materials and using library resources; handles circulation (e.g., checking books in/out, receiving/shelving); operates a computer to maintain circulation/inventory records; works in a resource center providing assistance to teachers in locating instructional materials.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions are assigned to an elementary library or resource center or intermediate or high school library. Incumbents at the elementary, intermediate and continuation high school levels, manage the day-to-day library operation which vary from structured (i.e., regular classroom visits) to open. Incumbents normally work under minimal supervision from the school principal or from the Librarian at the high schools. The class of Library Assistant is distinguished from classes in the secretarial/clerical series in that incumbents perform duties requiring the development of specialized knowledge of library systems (e.g., cataloging, circulation, index systems) and work directly with groups of students.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION : Graduation from high school or equivalency is required.

EXPERIENCE : A minimum of six (6) months of clerical experience or experience working with school-age children is required.

LICENSE/LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS : A valid, Class C, California driver's license, a good driving record and use of a private automobile may be required, and if so, must be maintained during employment. The ability to speak and read Spanish is required for the class of Library Assistant-Bilingual (Spanish).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this classification work primarily inside a school library or resource center environment, with constant interruptions, and have direct contact with students and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit, stoop/bend, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. or up to 50 lbs. with assistance, use fingers repetitively, use wrists or hands repetitively in a twisting motion; use both hands simultaneously, speak clearly, hear normal conversation, and see small details.

PROOF OF EDUCATION:

ADVANCED SALARY STEP PLACEMENT
New employees are normally placed at Step A of the appropriate salary range for this classification. If the hiring authority requests advanced salary step placement to the Personnel Director, the new employee's eligibility will be determined in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule and Regulation 17.2.1. The Personnel Commission shall have final approval on any advanced salary step placement requests. Contact the Personnel Commission office for further information if you are hired. Advanced salary placement is only available to employees upon their initial hire

APPOINTMENT
Candidates who pass all hurdles of the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list in rank order based on final scores including any veteran's / seniority credit. The top three ranks of eligibles who are ready and willing to accept the position shall be referred to the hiring administrator for interview. The eligibility list will be established for six (6) months . All new employees are subject to passing a physical examination, tuberculosis test, background review and must provide satisfactory evidence of authorization to work in the United States. Employment start date is contingent upon fingerprinting and criminal background clearance.

In accordance with Education Code 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months or 130 working days of paid service, whichever is longer. No employee shall attain permanent status in the classified service until s/he has completed a probationary period in a class. An employee may be released at any time during the probationary period.

PROCESSING FEE:
New employees will be charged a processing fee (approximately $64) for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY, payable to RUSD.

VETERANS CREDIT
For entry level classes, veterans with thirty (30) days or more of active service (during a time of war or national emergency) who obtain a passing score shall be allowed an additional credit of five (5) points and disabled veterans receive ten (10) additional points. Entry-level positions are defined as all positions within the classified service when the eligible is first employed by the District, except for positions designated management or senior management. Veterans must supply a copy of their Form DD214 along with their application in order to receive such credit. Veterans credit can only be applied upon initial hire.

VACATION
Employees with one (1) to three (3) years of service earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year. The number of vacation days earned progressively increases as provided in the RUSD-CSEA Agreement, Appendix A. Part-time employees earn vacation benefits prorated on the average number of hours worked per day per month in their regular assignments.

HOLIDAYS
For twelve month employees, fifteen(15) paid holidays are earned each year and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year.

SICK LEAVE
One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. Employees who transfer from another California school district, including a county superintendent of schools office, who have accrued sick leave may transfer it to this District.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Employees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program which consists of medical, dental, vision, life insurance and income protection.

EDUCATIONAL STIPEND
Beginning the 2022-23 school year, all employees who have an earned Bachelor's or Master's degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend.
Once a transcript is submitted and verified by the Human Resources division, unit members will be eligible for one stipend based on the highest degree earned. Stipend amounts will be divided into 10 monthly payments, September - June. The stipend amount will be prorated for any midyear degrees conferred in the month the transcript was submitted to and verified by the Human resources Department.
  • Bachelor's degree are eligible for an annual $500 stipend.
  • Bachelor's and Master's degree are eligible for an annual $1000 stipend
RETIREMENT
Employees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Please see below fo view the retirement formula below:
  • PEPRA Member - Enrolled in CalPERS after December 31, 2012. (Your first time being enrolled in CalPERS)
  • Classic Member - Enrolled in CalPERS prior to January 1, 2013
