MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR - Public Works

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Beginning in November each year, working hours will vary. May be assigned to 3rd shift during Winter months.

Salary: $25.60-$37.00 Hourly • $53,249.25-$76,960 Annually

Non-Negotiable Starting Pay: $25.6006 Hourly / $53,249.25 Annually

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, performs manual semi-skilled or skilled work in the operation of trucks and motorized equipment and repair of streets, parks and sewers. May act as lead worker for small crews of unskilled or semi-skilled workers. Assignments may be given in detail or may follow established routine. Considerable independence is exercised, but work is regularly checked by the supervisor for quality, quantity and safety of operation and care of equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


  • Operate public works equipment including, but not limited to, backhoe, end loader, street sweeper, asphalt injection machine, grader, roller, tar kettle, boom trucks, various dump trucks, hook lift equipment, mowers, tractors, skid steer, elevator, bailer, flood pumps, leaf spreader and vacuum, etc.

  • Utilize heavy equipment to spray patch asphalt, scarify and blade asphalt roads, dig ditches, spread rock, load trucks, collect refuse, plow snow and clean and repair sewers.

  • Maintain public works equipment and vehicles by performing minor maintenance and service on equipment including, but not limited to, greasing fittings, topping of fluids, changing brooms, changing plow blades and calibrating salt spreaders.

  • Perform work zone safety duties including "Competent Person for Excavation"; utilize and wear proper safety gear and equipment.

  • Clean and maintain equipment as necessary.

  • Provide work instruction to small crews on assigned projects as requested.

  • Fill in for crew leader as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Expertise

High school diploma or GED equivalent; three (3) years experience in operation and routine maintenance of public works vehicles and construction motor equipment and in road and sewer maintenance or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Specific knowledge of public works, construction techniques and standards, basic maintenance and manual work tasks, operation and function of related hand and power tools, operation and routine maintenance of public works vehicles and equipment, OSHA regulations, JULIE locates and markings and safe work practices.

Skill in effectively communicating with those contacted throughout the course of the workday, maintaining effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and the members of the public, safe and proper operation of equipment, and effectively leading and coordinating small crews and public works projects, tracking costs, documenting daily activities; and ensuring efficiency, quality and safety.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ensure a safe work environment; to work assigned shifts and standby, report to emergency work situations, including snow removal and signs down.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations


  • Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, upon application.

  • Valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with air brakes endorsement and tanker endorsement, or equivalent, within 60 days of hire.

  • Valid "Competent Person for Excavation" certification within six (6) months of hire.

The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close visition, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work under varied weather condtions.

Residency Requirement:

AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City's Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
