DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT:

The Probation Officer is a non-exempt position under general supervision of the Municipal Court Administrator and the Presiding Municipal Court Judge. The Probation Officer is primarily responsible for monitoring compliance of adult and juvenile offenders. The Probation Officer will be in charge of recommending and implementing conditions of probation and insuring compliance with Court orders. This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for the adult and juvenile probation function of the Municipal Court Monitors adult and juvenile probationers, including direct supervision and referrals to community resources Monitors compliance with random drug and alcohol testing and treatment Assists defendants with finding and securing drug, alcohol, and mental health treatment Maintains positive working relationships with substance abuse and mental health treatment providers, third- party resource providers, Department of Human Services, defense attorneys, prosecuting attorney, and court partners Formulates case plans for administrative compliance strategies and will recommend extension or termination of probation through a variety of sanctions Testifies at probation review and/or revocation hearings as necessary or requested by the prosecuting attorney Implements and maintains the probation caseload to include investigations Provide recommendations for sentencing to the court and will present information to support such recommendations Performs occasional safety and/or home visits to monitor compliance with the terms and conditions of probation Provide occasional victims assistance Maintains electronic documentation in support of all cases Coordinates community service projects Trains the Probation Case Manager Assistant Assists the Court or other supervising agencies with monitoring of all probationers IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS: May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade; and May be required to attend meetings and training as needed

This position requires: Ability to work independently with limited supervision Proficiency in written communication, including the use of Microsoft Office products such as Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel Proficiency in verbal communication and the ability to make presentations and provide advice and assistance to other personnel and to probationers Skilled at working with caseloads, probationers, parolees, or other similarly situated high-risk clientele Ability to make decisions independently Ability to learn and follow policies and procedures Knowledge of legal terminology Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public, and other agencies, and organizations Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, attorneys, and third-party providers Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above, this position requires the following: A bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or Social Work. OR An associate's degree from an accredited university or college in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or Social Work with two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, code or animal enforcement, probation or parole. This experience must include working directly with cases, caseloads, probationers, parolees, offenders, or high-risk clientele. OR A high school diploma or equivalent with four (4) years of experience in law enforcement, code or animal enforcement, probation or parole. This experience must include working directly with cases, caseloads, probationers, parolees, offenders, or high-risk clientele. AND A valid driver's license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license Preferred Qualifications: Applicants who are bilingual in Spanish

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The duties in this classification are primarily performed indoors, in a comfortable office environment. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to meet the physical demands of the job including the ability to retrieve information from various locations in the office when needed. The individual will be frequently exposed to periods of demanding activity, frequent interruptions, and moderate to high mental stress. Incumbents must be willing to work additional hours or overtime, if required, including availability at night and on weekends. The position requires a great deal of interpersonal communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies. Punctuality and attendance are an especially high priority as the individual is primarily the sole support for case management. The incumbent must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity as he or she will be required to handle extremely sensitive information. All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination. Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
