Overview
Assess for and establish, as appropriate, vascular access device (VAD) placement based on patient assessment, therapeutic needs, and duration of therapy. Assessment and troubleshooting of all types of vascular access sites and function (includes peripheral IV catheters, PICC lines, central lines, cordis lines, and implanted ports). Knowledge and ability to perform catheter maintenance for all VADs per RHS policy and procedures. Provide patient and/ or caregiver instruction and be a resource & educator for nursing staff regarding vascular access care and maintenance, complication management, provides consultative services to physicians related to VADs. Provide input with written policies and procedures related to VAD insertion, care and maintenance. Ability to interact as a member of an interdisciplinary care team. Must be able to work independently with limited supervision, demonstrating good time management, proper use of resources, and sound nursing judgment. Must maintain knowledge and competency level with seminars, magazines, books related to infusion therapy; maintain certification as applicable.

What you will do
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient for appropriate vascular access device based upon patient clinical needs by applying the Infusion Nurses Standards of Practice.
  • Provides resource education for patients, families, nursing staff, and physicians regarding vascular access insertion, care, maintenance, and complication identification and management. Available to physicians for consultative services for VADs
  • Accurately completes all required clinical and quality documentation consistently per RHS standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with patients, families, nursing staff and MD to develop, implement and evaluate plan of care for vascular access device placement based upon treatments and procedures that contribute to the expected outcomes for each patient.
  • Assesses and incorporates evidence-based standards of practice. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team in the coordination of care to assist with early discharge of infusion patients to alternate sites.
  • Operate ultrasound device to locate veins appropriate for peripheral and central access placement while maintaining a sterile field.
  • Place vascular access devices under sterile technique to include but not limited to guide wire IV, Midlines, PICC lines.
  • Act as a resource to team members on vascular access site care and maintenance
  • Able to troubleshoot difficult complications of VADs or assist nursing staff as a resource in declotting.
  • Acts as a patient advocate in all areas, particularly those pertaining to IV administrations. Reports variances in rCare in the interest of patient safety and best practice.
Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelors Degree, Nursing (Preferred) or
  • Associates Degree, Nursing (Preferred) or
  • Program Graduate, Nursing (Nursing Diploma is minimum education requirement, Associate's or Bachelor's in Nursing accepted in lieu of Nursing Diploma) (Required) and
  • High School Diploma or GED, HS Diploma/GED only required if Nursing Diploma Graduate (Required)
Experience
  • 1 year Experience Working with Central Lines (Preferred)
  • 1 year RN experience required for PRN roles (Required)
  • 2 years RN experience required for Temp roles (Required)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) or licensed in a compact state Upon Hire(Required) and
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire(Required) and
  • Certified Registered Nurse Intravenous (CRNI) - Infusion Nurses Certification Corporation Upon Hire(Preferred) and
  • Vascular Access Board Certification - Vascular Access Certification Corporation Upon Hire(Preferred)
