Head Custodian - 8.0 hrs/day (1.0 FTE), Full Time, Permanent

Location: North Clackamas Schools

Position Summary

The head custodian supports the school by providing leadership and direction in planning for and maintaining the building, grounds, and physical plant, and by supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude, and pride of students. The head custodian also provides direct support to classroom teachers in setup and maintenance of furniture and equipment and serves as a role model by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful demeanor. The role assists with building/campus security as necessary and supports building activities in collaboration with the building principal on organizing evening activities and ensuring custodial support.

Compensation

Initial wage placement according to NCSD/OSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Classified Wage Schedule 2025-2026 applies (Step 2 to Step 9, F). See district schedule for exact pay steps and rates.

Schedule and Work Calendar

  • Schedule: 7:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m.
  • Work calendar: 260 days
  • Subject to change depending on department need

Pre-Placement Requirement

  • Pre-placement drug screening is required

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all district employees, vendors, contractors, and public entities
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Three or more years experience as a custodian and two years experience in a leadership position, or a combination of both demonstrating ability to lead staff and direct work
  • Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and meet tight time constraints and deadlines
  • Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts, and district vehicles; spend most of the work day standing, lifting, and walking
  • Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically, and by phone; ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.
  • Experience with and knowledge of intrusion alarms, automatic fire alarm/sprinkler systems, HVAC systems and controls
  • Ability to operate power equipment and maintain lift certification
  • May be trained in CPR, possess current First Aid certification, and be trained or willing to be trained on defibrillators

  • Prior lead or supervisory experience managing other staff

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleaning Functions: Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish; change lights; maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly building per standards.
  • Grounds and safety: Pick up litter; ensure safety during inclement weather; handle snow removal and related safety tasks
  • Administrative/Operations: Recognize maintenance needs, initiate service requests, manage building inventory, and request supplies
  • HVAC and facilities coordination: Coordinate HVAC filter changes, schedule heating times, doors and alarms; advise principal on equipment and maintenance
  • Security: Maintain keys/security, secure building at end of shift, verify emergency equipment
  • Emergency planning and response: Participate in emergency planning and response efforts
  • Leadership: Provide direction and guidance to crews, assign work, inspect completed tasks, and provide input on performance
