Job Description

The Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking an experienced congenital heart surgeon to develop, expand, and lead the growing Stanford University Faculty affiliated congenital heart surgery program with the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group in Honolulu, Hawaii. The candidate should be board eligible/certified by the Congenital American Board of Thoracic Surgery or its equivalent. An academic appointment in the Clinician Educator Line at Stanford, at the appropriate level (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) for the selected candidates experience, will be offered.

The current program is supported by a core group of cardiologists and a newly constructed state of the art cardiac catheterization/electrophysiology laboratory. The Kapiolani Medical Center offers a full range of services to patients of all ages, ranging from infants to adults born with congenital heart disease. The infrastructure consists of an outstanding pediatric/cardiac intensive care unit, a full-service neonatal unit, and an experienced anesthesiologist team. The program provides comprehensive support for infants and children living in Hawaii or on the Pacific Rim.

The selected candidate will assume responsibility for the treatment of complex congenital heart defects in newborns, children, adolescents, and adults. The director position will be based at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, with adult congenital heart surgery performed at Straub Medical Center. There is potential for surgical collaboration with other major hospitals in Honolulu. The surgeon will be an integral part of the Stanford congenital cardiac surgery team, with opportunities for research and scholarship.

Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH) is committed to partnering with premiere mainland pediatric centers of excellence for the most complex care of these infants and children, and Stanford University and Stanford Medicine Childrens Health (SMCH) have been integral in supporting the complex care of these patients. It is anticipated HPH and SMCH will continue to work as a team to support the congenital heart program in Honolulu.

Specific clinical responsibilities will include the longitudinal care of pediatric cardiac surgical patients and the support of an outstanding well established ECMO program. Opportunities for research and other scholarship opportunities exist in collaboration with the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. In the collaborative care model at Kapiolani Medical Center, there are substantial teaching interactions with fellows, house staff, and medical students. Opportunities for program development throughout the Pacific Rim are present. This position is in the Clinician Educator line at Stanford, emphasizing appointment and promotion through engagement in clinical care, teaching, administrative and/or scholarly activities that advance clinical medicine.

Qualifications for the position include obtaining a current valid and unrestricted Hawaii medical license, extensive experience in treating the entire breadth of congenital heart surgery, from newborns to adults. Administrative leadership experience is also preferred, and additional skills in treating acquired cardiac disease are valuable assets.

Pursuant to California statute, the salary range is provided. The expected base pay range for this position is:

  1. Assistant Professor: $295,000 to $360,000
  2. Associate Professor: $430,000 to $460,000
  3. Professor: $510,000 to $540,000

This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicines faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
